What is Asphalt Milling?

Commercial Asphalt Milling involves a few steps.  First, existing asphalt is removed to a specified depth with the help of advanced machinery. Hunziker Asphalt Paving LLC uses a Wirtgen cold milling machine for digging up asphalt to a desired depth, typically 2 to 4 inches. In certain cases, cold milling machines are equipped to dig out asphalt up to a depth of 12 inches. The recommended depth of asphalt removal is determined by both the extent of asphalt deterioration, in addition to the overall plan for asphalt replacement. Once the depth is determined, sensors on the cold milling machine make it easy to maintain a standard milling depth. This machine can be used to establish a specific grade, while removing any ruts or other imperfections.  Our 4’ drum machine allows us to work in tighter areas, which reduces the daily cost of using larger machines.

Cold milling machines are known to be environmentally friendly.  Our team is equipped to safely transport all the removed asphalt in dump trucks to the asphalt recycling center.  Finally, the milled surface is power-swept, removing all debris from the milling process. The milled surface is now prepped for the new asphalt.
